Thanks to our generous donors, officials from Walled Lake and Sterling Heights have been awarded the Tim Doyle Scholarship to cover the costs to participate in an upcoming Michigan Municipal League training for elected local officials.
Michael Radtke, Jr., Sterling Heights councilman, and Gabriel Costanzo, Walled Lake councilman, were selected by the MML Foundation to attend an Elected Officials Academy Core Weekender training in February in Frankenmuth. There, they’ll learn about financial management, leadership skills, legal issues, planning and zoning, and other municipal-related topics.
“Education helps elected officials make the tough decisions that are facing all Michigan communities these days,” said Radtke. ”From budgeting to contract negotiations to pensions, a working knowledge of how cities function, and the elected official’s role in these processes is necessary to effective government.”
Costanzo agreed, adding that attending training makes him a better public servant.
“Elected officials work for the residents of the community and should be as effective as possible for whom they work for,” Costanzo said. “Ongoing education … will help to deliver the results expected by those who hired/elected us.”
The Tim Doyle Scholarship Fund helps provide access to the most critical information for newly elected officials through the Elected Officials Academy (EOA) Core Weekender seminar. The scholarship was created in honor of Tim Doyle, who passed away in early 2008. Doyle was a councilmember in Durand, an EOA board member, and an ardent supporter of elected officials training. His wife, Deb Doyle, is a past president of the Michigan Municipal League, former EOA board member, and current mayor of the city of Durand. The EOA board resolved that Tim Doyle be honored through this educational scholarship program.
Help us keep this valuable training resource for newly elected officials. For every $1,000 donated, you can help six local elected officials get the tools they need to identify, develop and implement strategies that will grow and strengthen Michigan’s communities. You can make a contribution conveniently and securely.
Thank you for your support!
