Dennis Archer Scholarship Fund

History

Denis ArcherThe Dennis Archer Fund was established in 2001 by the National League of Cities (NLC) in response to the generous contributions of the Michigan Municipal League (MML), which raised $25,000 from private donors in honor and celebration of the election of then-Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer as NLC President.  The scholarship fund was created to be used to cover expenses for young people who are selected to attend the NLC Congress of Cities under the auspices of the Institute for Youth, Education and Families.

Archer’s background as a public school teacher, in part prompted the League to launch the special fund.  “Mayor Archer is a former school teacher, and we felt that this fund would be an excellent way to honor him for his accomplishments, while supporting an important NLC program priority,” said Mayor Charles Smiley of Burton, Michigan, Past President of the Michigan Municipal League. “In addition, Mayor Archer is the first NLC President from Michigan since 1974, and we are all very proud of him.”

Annual Essay Contest

Every year the MML Foundation presents an essay contest for high school students (ages 15-18) to stimulate interest in local government and public service.  The winners receive an expense paid trip to the NLC Congress of Cities conference where they will have the opportunity to participate in many youth delegate workshops and network with public officials from around the country.  The winners must be accompanied by an adult who will receive up to $500 toward their expenses upon submission of travel receipts.

Future NLC Congress of Cities Conferences:
November 13, 2013 - November 16, 2013 Seattle, Washington
November 19, 2014 - November 22, 2014 Austin, Texas

The essay contest is designed to give students an opportunity to use their knowledge and experience to creatively voice their views on what they value in their community and how it can be improved.  The essay topic is "If you were an elected official (i.e. councilmember/mayor/village president) how would you improve the quality of life in your community?"  Essays will be judged on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar and spelling.

The 2013 NLC Congress of Cities will be held November 13 - 16, 2013 in Seattle, Washington.  For the 2013 essay contest information, please click the links below:
